Vertical Jumping: What Is the Mystery?

I can remember back when I was in middle school and tried out for track and field. I wasn`t a big guy, but I certainly didn`t think I would have a problem throwing myself over the high jump. It couldn`t have been set higher than my chest, so I thought it was a “slam dunk”. Well, it wasn`t - I came away, covered in bruises, and absolutely humiliated that apparently I had no jump at all.

I am an athletic guy and to be faced with such a simple task and see that I had no skills was purely embarrassing. The next year I tried out for basketball and found out that the same problem plagued me on the basketball court. Luckily, I could shoot and I had mad skills with the ball, so I had a lot of value to the team, but if they were planning on me blocking a shot, forget about it!

For me, vertical jumping was always a mystery and no matter how many times I practiced it in my bedroom, on the court, or on the track, it never seemed to improve. I would jump, over and over, hoping that the repetition alone would make a difference and it never did.

As I got older and wanted to continue in sports, I figured that lower body weight training would do the trick. Maybe I just had weak legs? But a lot of squats and bulked up legs only kept me closer to the ground. It was then that I got smart and started doing my research. I found many sources online that proved to me that all of the things I had tried were wrong, and in fact, they were actually keeping me from jumping. The more repetition I did of small jumps, the more I trained my body NOT to jump high. The more muscles I got in my quad, the less rapidly I was able to move them and the less effective my vertical jumping had become.

One online resource that I did find that put the whole picture together for me was The Jump Manual. It was there that I confirmed a lot of the information I had gathered. For instance, you have to train for both strength and quickness in order for power to take place. You have to train your muscles to perform the actual motion at the exact speed you want to take place when you are on the court. I, apparently, had been doing it all wrong up until then.

Hopefully, you don`t have quite the vertical jumping problems that I did, and you are just someone who wants to add a few inches to their jump to improve your status and stature on the court. By learning some new techniques and practicing the correct way all the time, you should be able to add at least a few inches in a matter of weeks, and over time, you will be able to out-jump pretty much anyone you know.
